The bunkhouse is owned and run by Emma and Peter Harrison.
Emma and Peter are both holders of the Mountain Leader award, and also offer guided walks in the Black Mountains as well as the Central and Western Beacons.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can book?                                                                                                                                            
The person making the booking must be at least 18 years old and takes responsibility for the whole group. They are our main contact before, during and after the stay.

How many people can stay?
The bunkhouse sleeps up to 20 people across 6 bedrooms. You can book the whole bunkhouse for exclusive use, or book private bedrooms when available.

What are your check-in and check-out times?
Check-in is from 4pm to 10pm. Check-out is by 10am.
If you expect to arrive after 10pm, please let us know in advance so we can make arrangements.

What about bedding and towels?
All beds are made up with a sheet, pillow and duvet. Please do not bring your own bedding or sleeping bags, this helps us keep a clean, consistent standard for everyone. Towels are available to hire or please bring your own.

Is there a kitchen we can use?
Yes, there is a shared self-catering kitchen with cookers, kettles, fridges, a freezer, microwaves and basic cooking equipment. You are welcome to cook your own meals and store food during your stay. We also have a covered BBQ area and outdoor seating.

Do you offer catering?
We do not provide catering, but there are pubs, cafés and takeaways in surrounding towns and villages. Please note that there is just one small pub in Bwlch itself, and a farm shop & café at the edge of the village.

Do you have WiFi and mobile signal?
Free WiFi is available through most of the bunkhouse. Mobile signal can be patchy with some networks, but most guests can make calls and use data in the village.

Are dogs allowed?
Well behaved, family friendly dogs are welcome by prior arrangement.

Is the bunkhouse suitable for children?
Yes, children are welcome. The building is on several levels with steps, stairs and hard floors, plus heavy fire doors, so children must be supervised at all times by parents, guardians or group leaders. It is not designed for babies and toddlers, so discretion is advised.

Is The Star Bunkhouse accessible?
The bunkhouse may not be suitable for guests with limited mobility. If anyone in your group has specific access needs, please contact us before booking so we can explain the layout.

What about parking and EV charging?
There is a small on-site car park available for guests, subject to space, with one space available for EV charging. Vehicles and belongings are left at your own risk.

How do I get there by public transport?
The nearest train station is Abergavenny. From there you can take a bus or taxi to Bwlch. The X43 bus service runs through the village, please check current timetables before you travel.

Do you have drying or kit storage facilities?
There is a drying room for wet kit and space to store boots and outdoor gear, but space is limited. We provide extra hangers and newspaper for boots.

Can you store bikes, canoes or other equipment?
Yes, we have secure storage, plus e-Bike charging points, in one of our garages.

What about heating & fuel?                                                                                                             
Central heating is provided and there is a good supply of hot water for showers. As an optional extra, we sell local charcoal & kiln dried hardwood logs for use on our chiminea as a BBQ/outdoor fire & for our indoor wood-burning stove, but please feel free to bring your own.

What are your booking and payment terms?
A 33% deposit is required at the time of booking to secure your stay. The remaining balance is due when you check in.

What is your cancellation policy?
If you need to cancel, please let us know as soon as possible by email.
We will return the deposit if we can re-let all rooms booked (or a proportion of the deposit if we can re-let some of the rooms) minus a £5 admin fee.
We recommend taking out travel insurance to cover unexpected cancellations.

Are stag or hen groups accepted?
To keep things comfortable for everyone, we cannot accept stag or hen parties or other noisy groups.

Do you have quiet hours?
Yes. Quiet hours are from 11pm to 7am, both inside the bunkhouse and outside. Please be aware that we have close neighbours and an overnight caretaker on site.

Health & safety                                                                                                                                           
For everyone’s safety, please follow any fire safety information and evacuation procedures displayed in the building.                     
Smoking, vaping, candles and open flames are not allowed anywhere inside the building. Fireworks and Chinese lanterns are not permitted outside.                                                                  
If anyone’s behaviour is unacceptable and warnings are ignored, we may ask you to leave. In these circumstances, no refund will be given.
We reserve the right to charge for any damage or extra cleaning caused.

Data and communication                                                                                              
We use the contact details you give us to manage your booking and stay in touch about your visit. We will not share your details with third parties except where required by law or for legal reasons.

Acceptance of these terms                                                                                                                           
By paying your deposit, you confirm that you have read and agree to these booking terms and conditions and that you are authorised to make the booking on behalf of your group.
